This cemetery, located at the intersection of Henry County roads # 700S and #575E in Dudley township, was established on1 Oct 1839 when Nathan Macy deeded 2 acres of land to the Hopewell friends church trustees for the location of a church and a burial ground for said church. The original trustees of 1839 were John Symons, Jesse Bundy and Aaron Pleas.    The church previously was located about a mile southeast of this location. In 1839 the church building was moved to the new location by "log rolling" it across the land to this new location.    The Hopewell friends are most likely the first organized church group in Henry County having organized around 1823 in the upper Symon's creek neighborhood. The old original Hopewell burial grounds are still located at the earlier location, but are nearly unreachable at the present time due to being several hundred yards from any road and located in the middle of a cornfield. They are seldom visited anymore and few markers remain. There is a historic marker that was erected by the Henry County Historical Society noting the location and history of the cemetery (see photo) The old cemetery hasn't been used since the 1850s and has been long abandoned.    Thomas Hamm and the New Castle Junior High School History Club recorded the original burial listing in 1977. Mr. Hamm used the Quaker church records to add additional burials here. Many of the old records simply stated "buried at Hopewell" so what I have done with this list is to include the known burials in the "old" Hopewell cemetery with the burials in the "new" Hopewell cemetery. Those buried in the old Hopewell cemetery will be noted by ** following the name.    Mr. Ken Holmes and myself returned to the Hopewell cemetery in October of 2005 and updated all of the recent burials in the cemetery since the last recording of 1977. The cemetery is in excellent condition and is one of the best cared for in the county.
