Sulphur Springs Cemetery

Jefferson Township - Est. c1830s

The Sulphur Springs cemetery is locate in section #18 in Jefferson Township, just north of US #36, near the railroad and the grain elevator. It was started in 1834 when Joel Simmons Jr., son of Revolutionary War veteran Joel Simmons Sr. who owned the land, picked a spot for his son's burial.
The old cemetery has not had any burials since the 1960s and is presently kept in fairly good shape by the town of Sulphur Springs. For a few years it was all but forgotten and neglected. There are several stones that have deteriorated to where they are unreadable and leaning badly. Several stones need to be reset in bases.
This cemetery was recorded in the 1970s by Thomas Hamm and published by the Henry County Historical Society. I have attempted to update other burials that have been noted from other sources such as pauper burial records and family files since the last recordings were taken.
